Chaukori Tourism & Travel Guide

Discover the tranquil bowl-shaped hill retreat of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.

Chaukori Overview

A Hidden Jewel in the Kumaon Hills

Sitting at a peaceful elevation of 2,010 meters (6,590 ft), Chaukori gets its name from its natural bowl-like ('Chau-kori') geographical formation amidst high ridges.

Unlike crowded commercial hill stations, Chaukori has preserved its quiet, pristine mountain charm. It offers clean unpolluted air, virgin pine and oak forests, heritage tea gardens established in the 19th century, and sweeping views across the Nanda Devi biosphere and Panchachuli peaks.

Bhanumati Homestay is located right in the heart of Chaukori, making it the perfect peaceful base for your Kumaon holiday.

How to Reach Chaukori

By Train

Kathgodam Railway Station is the primary railhead, located approx. 180 km away. Daily express trains (Ranikhet Express, Shatabdi) connect Kathgodam with Delhi, Lucknow, and major cities. Taxis are available outside the station.

By Road

Chaukori is well connected by scenic all-weather mountain roads from Almora (115 km), Bageshwar (47 km), Nainital (175 km), and Haldwani (185 km). State transport buses and shared jeeps operate regularly.

By Air

Pantnagar Airport (PGH) is the nearest domestic airport (approx. 210 km). Regular flights connect Pantnagar with New Delhi and Dehradun.

Best Time to Visit Chaukori:

• October to March (Clear Skies & Snow Views): The ideal time for mountain photographers and lovers of crisp Himalayan air. Peak visibility is 100% on most days.
• April to June (Pleasant Summer): Escape the heat of northern plains with cool breezes, blossoming rhododendrons, and green tea gardens.
• July to September (Lush Monsoon): Misty landscapes, verdant forests, and romantic clouds rolling over the valley.
